Today, over 200,000 active duty and reserve Marines serve our country. They are known for their dedication, courage, and willingness to fight for our freedoms. So, on this Marine Corps birthday, let’s take a look at the history behind the Corps and how it has become the renowned fighting force it is today.
The History of the U.S. Marine Corps
The U.S Marine Corps is one of the most respected military organizations in the world. They are highly trained and well-equipped to fight in any environment, whether it be on land, sea, or air. The Marines have a long and honorable history dating back to November 10, 1775, when they were first established by the Continental Congress.
Since then, the Marines have played a vital role in some of the most significant moments in American history. Today, Marines continue to live up to their motto of “Semper Fidelis” (Always Faithful) every day. The Marine Corps Birthday is celebrated every year on November 10th to honor all those who have served, and continue to serve, our country so bravely.
The Cake Cutting Ceremony
The cake-cutting ceremony is a time-honored tradition that has been passed down through the years. The ceremonial cutting of the cake represents the yearly renewal of each marine’s dedication to the Corps and the dedication of the Corps to the pursuit of world peace and freedom.
The Mameluke sword is traditionally used to cut the birthday cake as a symbol of the band of warriors’ dedication to upholding the sword so that our country may live in peace. The oldest marine in attendance receives the first slice of cake as a mark of respect and honor for age and seniority. The youngest marine in attendance will then receive a piece of cake from the oldest marine present, representing the passing of experience, knowledge, and wisdom as well as faith and confidence in those who will uphold Marine Corps traditions in the future.
